Effective Self Discipline Training Requires Personal Self Mastery.

Emma Seppälä Ph.D., Yale lecturer, suggests that when it comes to concentration people find external focuses easy.It is the internal concentration that many of us struggle with and this is a problem.

We focus on work, tv, and the world around us but these things do not rule our happiness. It is our internal world that rules how we feel outwardly so we need to concentrate on this.

Knowing ourselves and having control over our internal selves is key to self-mastery; it allows us to have a handle on our emotions. When the world around us captures our entire focus, we can get blindsided by an emotion we did not expect. This is why we must make steps towards developing our self-mastery.

Building Self Discipline for Self Improvement Mastering 6 Areas of Self

1) Self Awareness

The very first step in self-mastery is self awareness. Wellbeing expert Tchiki Davis, Ph.D. says that to achieve self awareness we need to monitor our stress, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs.

It is a process that requires deep self examination. A brutally honest yet non-judgmental analysis of our fundamentals is key.

In order to reach this self-awareness, we have to give ourselves time to search inwardly at our feelings and motivations.

A helpful tool for this may be a long peaceful nature walk as this often helps to clear our minds and make us more receptive to self-examination.

2) Self Knowledge

The result of becoming more self aware is that we acquire self knowledge which makes using this new information our next step.

Once we are in touch with who we are fundamentally we can begin to assess how this affects our behavior out in the world.

Our strengths and weaknesses become more evident and using this knowledge we can create a plan for our lives.

3) Self Trust

Understanding ourselves can be daunting sometimes, what we find out about the people we are can be unsettling.

This is why we have to take the next step into trusting ourselves. We may feel like we are a bad person and have done some questionable things but that’s okay.

The important thing is that we realize our faults and we can fix them if we so choose.

We have to trust in our own assessment of ourselves in order to be able to make changes where needed.

4) Forgive Yourself

In order to reach self-mastery, we cannot allow ourselves to live with constant guilt.

We all make mistakes throughout our lives, but they cannot define us. Finding peace with our mistakes or forgiving ourselves for not achieving more is vital.

Embrace your past, the good and the bad, and then you are ready to move forward with a greater mastery of yourself.

5) Self Development

This step is key to achieving that illusive self-mastery. Once we have reflected upon ourselves and learned so much we must act. We must develop ourselves based on what we now know.

Taking steps to improve our education, be a more motivated person, or be a more empathetic soul is key.

We can discover our strengths and weaknesses but unless we actually act upon our discoveries, we have mastered nothing.

6) Self Mastery
We have now reached the point where each day is a step forward in increased self-mastery. This will include taking daily steps such as:

  • Keeping a positive mindset
  • Creating a vision for your future
  • Setting achievable but significant goals
  • Developing self-discipline for self improvement
  • Face setbacks with positivity and recover quickly
