What is motivational self help?

Motivational self help is any tool that is used to inspire or prompt a person to take action towards achieving some passionate goal or desire.

Motivational tools can be books, speeches, videos, music and other forms of inspiration that seeks to activate positive internal change and provoke ongoing external action.

My goal is to provide motivational self-help messages using every form of information format that I can get my hands on to pass along to you.

My personal experience with motivational self help

During a period of anxiety and depression, I took anti-depressants prescribed by my doctor. I had to learn how not to be desperate for anything and take my time. Patience wasn't my strong suit and it was difficult to slow myself down.

However, I didn't stop there. I sought ways to boost my self confidence and help myself feel better in general.

My desire to feel better and healthier from my love for myself and my family. I imagined living a better quality of life where I smiled more; laughed more; and felt inspired. This experience became my driving force.

Using motivational self help to take control of your destiny and make a difference in your life and others.

You have to WHY yourself until you're blue in the face. To stay motivated you need to clear about your WHY .

Another time after a health scare, I started a workout routine. Quality of life, health and family were my why . I wanted to be around a long time to spend my family and fulfill my purpose in good health.

I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Many years ago, I was a Mary Kay sales representative. And at another time I was a Beach body coach. Both of these business models stress the importance of knowing why you want to succeed .

If you want to find your WHY, you have to question yourself thoroughly. The answer (s) will become your driving force- your constant motivator. The questions you ask will depend on your goal.

Here are some examples of questions that will motivate you to clarify your why statement :

  • Why do you want to get out of debt?
  • Why do you want to be a good parent?
  • Why do I want to lose 10 pounds?
  • Why do I want to be in a relationship?

If you know what you want for the outcome, ask yourself why? And then write your why down in the form of a daily meditation and read it.

We've essentially been discussing motivational self help skills. Anybody can feel good when things are going well. It takes skill to push forward and stay motivated in tough times.

We have to get deep, tap into our star player and on purpose can change what isn't working. Whether that is a person, place or thing, the change will have to begin within you.

We have the inner power to help ourselves. We have the inner strength to change what needs to be changed to get where we want to be in life. If you're here, you are ready. You are ready to work on yourself, to help yourself move forward toward your purpose, whatever that may be.

There are several things you can do when you're "going through" hard times. First, remember that the situation is temporary. Sounds cliché but it’s the truth. We go through seasons in our lives. Seasons change and so do our circumstances.

What can newbies do to self motivate?

I've been practicing motivational self help for years. If I can do it so can you.

But, during the time that I was first seeking motivational self-help tools, I was at my lowest. I was taking anti-depressants and not feeling like doing much-even though I knew within my heart that I needed to.

I read spiritual books; listened to YouTube videos, and read online self-help articles.

Let me tell you, if you haven't noticed, there is a ton of information out that promises to motivate, but the sheer volume can scramble your brain. So, be careful not to tackle too much at one time. You don't have to.

Once you're further along, do some research the subjects of the brain and motivation and dopamine and neuroscience etc. Its informative and interesting, but I don't suggest you start there. Start small and work your way up.

Put the majority of your energy into self care-rest, meditation, professional guidance.

Keep in mind, information overload can cause de-motivation

Okay, moving forward. No matter how long it takes you to reach your personal goals, your attitude must remain that of a Queen. On this journey, it is going to make or break you. If you believe you can, you will. If you believe you can't, you won't.

That's where motivational self help comes in. If you can motivate yourself to keep your spirits up, and to take action when you need to, you will reach your goals.

So what are some simple things beginners can do to motivate themselves without feeling overwhelmed?

  1. Get into the habit of taking deep breaths.  Slow down, take a time out, and breath deeply to calm anxious thoughts.

  2. Listen to uplifting music. Research shows that music can alter emotions. Be sure to select happy upbeat tunes, nothing with my-baby-left-me-and-didn't-say-goodbye types of lyrics.

  3. Spend time with supportive friends; Avoid gossip. Hangout with people who inspire you.

  4. Take a stroll. Exercise reduces cortisol levels and increases dopamine. Physical activity reduces stress and improves mood. Move your body.

5.  Read e-books, or listen to audible books. Visit the self help genre and select the title that resonates with your desired goal.

6.  Confide in a trusted friend or counselor.

7.  Create daily confession or mantra and meditate on it at least three times a day. Use your why statement as your mantra.

8.  Get out of your comfort zone and try something new that you've always wanted to try but never made time. This will boost your self-confidence.

These few simple tips alone will help you help yourself, but let's keep going and look at some additional tips that will light the path to your own success.


Why can't I stay motivated?

If I had trouble staying motivated it was because of these 4 things:

  • I wasn't staying focused. I was taking my eyes off my goal and putting them on my obstacles.
  • What I thought I wanted wasn't my true passion. I had to get clear about my desired end result and re-clarify my why state.
  • I'd set the bar too high initially too the point that it seemed unreachable.
  • I'd fallen victim to what I call Motivation Stealers (read on below).

Motivation stealers set you up for failure. Take it one day at a time, one step at a time and you will succeed.

Become the little engine that could. 'I think I can. I think I can. I think i can."

Obstacles will show up on their own, so try not to put obstacles in your own way.

 5 things that will derail your self motivation train:

  1. Unrealistic Expectations- Create smaller goals. For example, my weight loss goal was 2 pounds per month. The small wins of reaching that goal kept me moving forward.

  2. Self Doubt- Please don't put pressure on yourself to be perfect; look perfect; or feel perfect every day. Learn how to accept yourself fully. Take it easy. If you fall off, get back up again and keep going.

  3. Negative Self Talk- Repeatedly downing yourself and complaining about lack of progress is like putting a huge boulder on your path. Use more motivational self talk.

The good news is that you are in control. The bad news is you are in control and only you can change it.
